Sunday, July 19, 2009 Bucksport, Maine

Finally a sunny day. We drove to Bucksport, Maine which is a rich Historic community located on the Penobscot River. We walked along the riverbank trail, took some great pictures, and went up into the only observatory bridge in the Western Hemisphere and the tallest in the world, 420 feet up or 42 stories, it's a 50 second elevator ride and one flight of stairs. Don't forget to double click on the pictures to get a better view, you'll be able to read the signs and at one point you might even feel like you are up in the tower. Enjoy!

This first view of Bucksport was taken from the other side of the river at Fort Knox. The second picture is Bucksport Marina. The Alamo theater is home to movie reel to reel preservation and history and is where Miss Sue's son Jason married Miss Krissy right on the movie stage.

A nice fountain is in the park. The Library is a beautiful piece of architecture. The Bucksport Historical Society is housed in this train depot station.

From Bucksport's waterfront looking down the Penobscot River we see the old Hancock-Waldo bridge and the new state of the art Penobscot Narrows bridge.

Across the river from Bucksport in Prospect is Fort Knox.

Crossing the bridge, it's high!

Plans for the disposition of the Old Waldo-Hancock Bridge are not confirmed at this time. The old bridge is part of the History of Bucksport and must be disposed of in an honorable way.

Views from the top of the observation tower.

Good bye bridge and tower, we enjoyed theview.

It was a good day to vacation in Maine.

  2. You'll love it. It's $5.00 which covers the cost to go up and visit to Fort Knox. Take a picnic and spend the day. If you go, stop at the Bucksport Marina. There is a walking path along the waterfront, very interesting.
